Empowering Tomorrow’s Builders through ACE Mentorship

Tonn and Blank Construction has been at the forefront of fostering the next generation of construction professionals through its active involvement in the ACE Mentor Program. This commitment to mentorship and education was vividly demonstrated through their partnership with the Ben Davis High School ACE Mentor Class during the 2023-2024 academic year. Together, we embarked on an enriching journey focused on the development of a Humane Society & Animal Clinic Facility project.

Throughout the course of the program, the students delved deep into various aspects of construction, guided by industry experts and mentors from Tonn and Blank Construction and other esteemed organizations. The curriculum covered an extensive array of topics essential to the construction process, ranging from site acquisition and design methodology to structural engineering and environmental considerations. With each session, the students gained invaluable insights and practical knowledge that formed the building blocks of their understanding of the construction industry.

One of the highlights of the program was the immersive site visits, which provided the students with real-world exposure to ongoing construction projects. A visit to the Hamilton County Humane Society offered a firsthand glimpse into the operations of a completed facility, enabling the students to grasp the intricacies of designing and constructing a functional animal clinic and adoption center. By interacting with staff members and understanding their needs and preferences, the students gained valuable perspective on the importance of incorporating user-centric design principles in construction projects.

Additionally, visits to our YMCA Green Castle construction site offered the students a comprehensive view of the different stages of construction. Witnessing the progress firsthand—from reinforced masonry and slab-on-grade construction to roof structural steel installation and interior framing—provided the students with a tangible understanding of the sequential nature of construction activities. These site visits served as invaluable learning experiences, complementing the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with practical, hands-on exposure.

At the helm of the Ben Davis High School ACE Team were industry professionals who generously volunteered their time and expertise to mentor the students. Mark Nordmeyer, a seasoned Mechanical Engineer from Verdant Engineering, and Ed Brown, an Architect from Etica Group, served as team leaders, guiding the students with their wealth of experience and knowledge. They were ably supported by co-mentors Jonathan Morris, a Structural Engineer from KPFF Engineers, Jack Leibham, Architect from CSO Architects, and Henry Woods, a Construction Project Manager from Zurbuch Development. Together, they provided mentorship and guidance, nurturing the students’ passion for construction and empowering them to explore diverse career paths within the industry.

As the program drew to a close, the impact of our involvement with the ACE Mentor Program became evident in the growth and development of the participating students. Armed with newfound skills, knowledge, and inspiration, these aspiring builders are poised to make meaningful contributions to the construction industry.
