Project Description

Spanning three stories and 70,243 square feet, this state-of-the-art Cancer Center consolidates diverse cancer care services into a cohesive and advanced center, strategically located adjacent to the North entrance of Franciscan Health Lafayette East Campus.

The construction progress was marked by key achievements including primary steel erection, with iron workers finalizing detailing on brick ledges and canopy steel. Tonn and Blank innovatively utilized temporary wall panels to enable continuous work during winter, facilitating the pouring of elevated concrete slabs on the second and third floors. Substantial concrete pours had taken place, including the completion of the west half of the second floor slab and ongoing work on the east half of the third floor slab, the final major pour of the project.

It’s important that we self-perform these construction activities to ensure better control over quality, schedule, and costs, leading to more efficient project execution.

The Lafayette Cancer Center integrates a comprehensive range of cutting-edge technologies and patient-focused services, including:

  • Oncology Infusion Therapy
  • Radiation Oncology featuring Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator
  • Comprehensive Breast Center with 3D Imaging and a Dedicated Breast Surgeon
  • Specialty Cancer Clinics
  • Oncology Clinical Research
  • Oncology Nurse Navigators
  • Genetic Testing and Counseling
  • Palliative Care Team
  • Spiritual Care
  • Community Support Groups/Cancer Survivorship
  • Comprehensive Lab Service

Tonn and Blank’s off-site construction facility prefabricated 143 exterior EIFS panels, which were then delivered and installed on the south and east elevations of the cancer center. This approach streamlined the construction process, ensuring higher quality control and efficiency while minimizing on-site disruptions.

Upon completion in February 2024, the center stands as the largest and most advanced cancer care facility in Tippecanoe County, offering unparalleled access to integrated medical oncology, radiation oncology, infusion services, and specialized breast care—all under one roof. This consolidation aims to streamline care delivery, enhance patient outcomes, and provide a supportive environment for patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.

As always, our team connected with the local institution, Purdue University’s Construction Management students, to give them a tour of the active Cancer Center project site. Bringing college students pursuing a degree in construction to active job sites is important because it provides them with practical, hands-on experience that complements their academic learning, enhancing their skills and understanding of real-world construction processes. Additionally, it helps bridge the gap between theory and practice, preparing them more effectively for their future careers in the construction industry.

The Franciscan Health Lafayette Cancer Center represents a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure, poised to set new standards in cancer treatment and patient care excellence within the community and beyond.
