A long-recognized leader in orthopedic surgery and programs, Franciscan Health is developing plans to expand those services in Central Indiana.
With the intent to expand the reach of our high quality of care, and remain industry-leading, the hospital system is in the process of planning an extension of services into the nearby Carmel community, thus ensuring patients greater access to outstanding quality service at affordable costs. The design of the project is influenced by the hospital’s decades of excellence in orthopedic research and experience to advance high-quality, value-based care.

“Our expansion efforts are a natural extension of our expertise,” said James Callaghan, MD, president and CEO for Franciscan Health Central Indiana. “In our continued commitment to our community, we have evaluated select opportunities that will improve care for more patients.”
A recent in-depth survey concluded the community would greatly benefit from expanded care by Franciscan Health, whose Indianapolis hospital is currently ranked on the “Healthgrades Best 50 Hospitals in America” list. That standing is further bolstered by Quantros CareChex ranking Franciscan Health Mooresville #1 in Indiana for joint replacement surgery.

Still in the developmental stage, Franciscan Health has drafted a preliminary plan and course of action to build a state-of-the-art and industry-leading medical facility on a 12-to-18 acres tract of land in Carmel. The project is known as the Franciscan Health Orthopedic Center of Excellence and includes:

• An orthopedic specialty hospital of approximately 135,000 square feet, and a medical office building of approximately 120,000 square feet, for a total of approximately 255,000 square feet
• Comprehensive orthopedic services
• A rehabilitation center for physical therapy
• An industry-leading diagnostic imaging and research center
• A multi-story parking garage and a sky bridge connecting the garage to the hospital building

“We believe this initiative will provide benefits not only to community members in that area but to patients across the Midwest region,” Callaghan said. “The goal is to create a center based on the depth of our orthopedic research and outstanding clinical outcomes.”
Further study will be conducted by Franciscan Health to determine more definition and detail regarding the project.
